VFL player breakdown
St Kilda and Sandringham assistant coach Paul Hudson dissects every Saints-listed VFL player from Saturday's game against the Northern Blues.
Arryn Siposs
He had a reasonable game that was better than the week before. His defensive efforts were up. He had five tackles and converted well by kicking two goals.
Trent Dennis-Lane
His GPS results would have been very high and he worked very hard from end to end and between the arcs. Trent worked well offensively with four goals and also defensively with his pressure. In his role as a forward he was on the move all the time. He really had a great impact.
Tom Lee
Statistically he didn’t have his best game but he did play his role for the team and competed well in the air. He brought the ball to ground and his leading patterns were very good. His GPS stats tell us that he had longer and more extended running efforts and he probably didn’t get used enough because our ball movement wasn’t aggressive enough. To his credit, he fought all day and played in front.
Billy Longer
Billy was very dominating in the ruck. He took marks all over the ground and had a very good game.
Daniel Markworth
He’s improving each week. He actually got about 19 disposals on the wing and he’s starting to show his fitness is improving. He’s quite quick and uses the ball well. Daniel had a good, sound game.
Spencer White
Spencer kicked two goals and he won some crucial one-on-one contests which was really pleasing. His body work in the contest was excellent. He made a couple of small decision-making errors but he’s aware of that and I’m sure he will be better for the run.
Josh Bruce
Josh had a great game in defence. His confidence grew in the way he used the ball and he’s been working hard on his kicking. He won one-on-one contests and dropped off at the right times which was a really good sign.
Tom Simpkin
Tommy had a really solid game in defence. His tackling and ability to leave his man was great and really set us up from down back.
Terry Milera
Terry was very unselfish on three occasions on Saturday. He didn’t kick the goals but was quite creative. He played more in the midfield this week because we were keen to get him in and around the ball. He physically imposed himself on the game and his pressure was tremendous.
Sam Dunell
Sammy played forward most of the time and didn’t have huge stats, but his ability to join in the contest and actually get in there and dish it out to others was really good on the day. It was just his disposal at times that he can tidy up at times. But overall he was good.
Cameron Shenton
The boys reckon I show a bit of favouritism to Shents sometimes but we’ve gone through our individual players and we all agree he would have been in our top few on the ground. He gave us offensive run and even had a shot at goal so overall he was really impressive.
Darren Minchington
Darren is another one that would have done really well in our ratings system. He played in the midfield and won his own ball so he was physically better this week. His ability to be on the move and decision making bought others into the game. He was very clean.
Maverick Weller
He showed really good leadership in stoppages. He won his own ball and collected plenty of it, which was great.
Jason Holmes
His first half was really pleasing and he was able to jump up and beat his opponent in the ruck, although he didn’t get much of the ball around the ground. In the second half he was physically challenged by the opposition ruckman and they stopped him from jumping. He began to work his way into the game around the ground and even kicked a goal. He’s showing some really good signs.
