ST KILDA has lost its fourth successive game, going down to the Gold Coast by 38 points at Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening.

But rather than lay down and allow the match to take the direction which it did against Hawthorn two weeks ago, Alan Richardson's men lifted in the third term and compiled a six-goal quarter that bought the margin back to 37 points at the last break.

Though the Saints had the run of the play for much of the term, the Gold Coast still managed to manufacture three replies.

St Kilda's willingness to run the ball through the middle of the ground and take the game on proved the main catalysts for this mini-revival that resembled last week's efforts against Carlton.

However, the Saints were badly beaten from the outset in almost every aspect of the match. Gary Ablett's three first quarter goals set the tone for the game, and it looked as if the Suns skipper was going to completely take the contest away from St Kilda until his former teammate Maverick Weller successfully limited his influence in the front third of the ground.

Despite the Suns utter domination for the first hour of the game, Jack Newnes, Cameron Shenton and Jimmy Webster all took large steps in their development as footballers.

Newnes, who had never amassed more than 26 disposals in a game, finished with 29 touches and his second career goal to be arguably St Kilda's best player for the day.

Not only did Shenton collect 22 disposals, but he did so at an excellent disposal efficiency of 86 per cent, illustrating his talents as a rebounding half-back.

After a slow start, Jack Steven was also prolific after an unusually quiet outing on Monday, while Lenny Hayes continued on his merry way with another stellar performance in the Saints engine room.

Arryn Siposs and Nick Riewoldt fought hard in the forward 50 under immense pressure at times, while Tom Curren had a team-high seven rebound 50s.

As has been in the case in St Kilda's last two games, it was a 30-45 minute passage of play that proved decisive. Aside from this, the Saints matched it with the away team around the ground and will head into the bye weekend with a 3-6 record.
