MIDFIELDER Tom Curren expects St Kilda to learn from the hardships of 2014 and be better for the experience.

The 22-year-old has re-signed until the end of 2016 as part of #SaintsFutureFest, a blitz that has stretched deep into a third week.

“When you’re not winning too many games, it can be easy to fracture and that sort of stuff,” Curren told SAINTS.com.au.

“But we’ve stuck fat and we’ll come out better on the other side. As a group we’re really tight-knit on and off the field.”

Curren was selected with pick 24 in the 2011 Rookie Draft from the Dandenong Stingrays.

He spent the entire 2011 and 2012 seasons in the VFL, before debuting late in 2013 and holding his spot for the last seven games of the year.

“I still have a lot of things I want to achieve and plenty of goals and ambitions, this is my fourth year and I can’t wait for 2015 to get started,” Curren said.

“It’s great that the club has shown some faith in me, particularly starting off as a rookie, and I’m rapt to have signed on for another year.”

Head of Football Chris Pelchen said the midfielder’s exceptional work ethic would hold him in good stead ahead of the 2015 season.

“Tom is the consummate professional with regards to his preparation and application to AFL football,” Pelchen told SAINTS.com.au.

“He is often seen in the gym or on the track doing extra training. Both his determination and work rate are outstanding qualities on which he can build a strong future."

Coach Alan Richardson echoed Pelchen’s sentiments and added that Curren’s team-first mentality set a great example for others to follow.

“He’s an outstanding team player with a terrific work ethic and prepares meticulously,” Richardson told SAINTS.com.au.

“Tom will play as a small forward and in the midfield for us and he’s already proven that he can hold down a number of important defensive roles on very good players.”

Curren played 16 senior matches in 2014 to take his career tally to 23. At 22 and with four years in the AFL system, the in-and-under on-baller is well placed to evaluate the direction the club is heading.

“It’s very exciting,” he said.

“We have a lot of us who are the same age, and if we can bring us through all together, then hopefully we can continue to build some momentum.

“On the training track and in meetings different voices are being heard and that shows that the next generation is starting to step up and be counted.

It’s really good for the growth of the club as a whole and the dynamic is changing.”

Curren's re-signing follows Luke Dunstan, Josh Saunders, Jack Newnes, Lewis Pierce and Nathan Wright in week one, Jimmy Webster, Blake Acres, Spencer White and Darren Minchington last week, in addition to Seb Rosson Monday and Daniel Markworth on Tuesday.
