ST KILDA's six first-year players and Tim Membrey were treated to 48 hours of fishing, diving and bonding on the weekend as part of the club's induction camp in South-East Tasmania.

Alan Richardson, Simon McPhee, Lindsay Gilbee, Paul Hudson, Tony Brown and Peta Searle accompanied the recently drafted players to Nick Riewoldt's property across Bass Strait.

This was the first induction camp held in Tasmania, following trips to Phillip Island in previous years.

"The last couple of days has been a great opportunity to develop relationships outside of the club setting," Player Welfare Manager Tony Brown told SAINTS.com.au.

"We've fished, cooked, laughed and talked about everything from football to music to movies. It was a greatly beneficial thing to do and I'm sure the players and coaches got a lot out of it."

The group left Melbourne on Friday evening and were up early on the Riewoldt family boat on Saturday morning. The aim was to cook everything they caught later in the night for the coaches.

"Nick's family and friends went above and beyond to make the weekend a resounding success and a great experience for all of us who were involved," Brown said.

"Nick's uncle and cousins, who allowed us to use their amazing boat, deserve a special thanks for giving us the opportunity to spend a day out on the water."

There were also discussions about objectives for 2015, expectations and the game plan.

The draftees were asked to rate themselves on a scale of 1-4 on the following topics:

  • Reliance and thriving
  • Getting organised
  • Learning and growth
  • Personal brand, and
  • Financial ownership

The exercise was intended to make the players consider their careers and lives beyond football, an initiative that Brown said was always challenging but worthwhile.

"Getting the boys to evaluate themselves is useful not just for us but also for them," he said.

"After they rank themselves, I rank them and then we sit down and have a chat about where they are at and where they want to be."

The entire travelling group embarked on a light jog early and some skills work on Sunday morning, before arriving back in Melbourne.
