ON TUESDAY morning Damo thought he was going to the Big Issue head office on Lonsdale Street to pick up his weekly allotment of magazines to sell.
He doesn’t have a usual pick up time because he never knows what street corner he will be on from one day to the next, and has been forced to uproot several times due to demand.
But this week was special.
He didn’t know it at the time, but head office had called him in specifically because a special visitor from St Kilda Football Club heard his story and wanted to help.
When young player Jack Billings walked around the corner to surprise him, Damo’s face lit up.
He watches as many matches as he can, but without a permanent residence and no money to pay for tickets it is hard to follow his beloved Saints.
A bayside kid himself, Damo was featured in the Big Issue in Augustas part of their ‘vendor profile’ section.
Billings introduced himself and surprised Damo with tickets to St Kilda’s last home game of the season. He also brought some warm clothes and a membership for 2016 to ensure he doesn’t miss another game.
“When I heard about Damo’s story I was touched by his determination to keep going and never give up,” Billings said.
“It was a real privilege to be able to head out and surprise him – he didn’t expect it and his reaction was priceless – I think it really made his week.”
As part of the club’s Saints Say Thanks campaign, Billings also offered to help Damo sell the Big Issue.
