St Kilda remains in a healthy injury position following the opening round of the season, with the Saints returning from Adelaide without any casualties.

Emerging key forward Paddy McCartin has put his hand up to come straight back into Alan Richardson’s side after an impressive performance on return from a hamstring strain.

GM of Football Performance Jamie Cox indicated that the teenager will come under strong consideration for senior selection this week after proving his fitness in a VFL practice match on Sunday.

“We’ve come through that game basically injury-free. We should have a full list from that game for selection this week,” Cox told saints.com.au on Tuesday night.

“The positive news from that practice match is Paddy McCartin had a terrific day out, kicked seven goals, but more importantly got through the game safely.

“Paddy hadn’t had a lot of pre-season time, but with that game under his belt he’ll now throw himself up for senior selection.”

St Kilda rookie’s Nick O’Kearney and Brenton Payne were the only injury concerns to emerge from the weekend after being injured in Sandringham’s clash with Box Hill.

First-year midfielder O’Kearney broke a bone in his forearm that is set to sideline him for up to six weeks, whilst project forward Payne has suffered a stress reaction in his shin which will put him out for a month.

“Our VFL team played a practice match on the weekend and the unfortunate injury news form that was Nick O’Kearney sadly broke his forearm and will miss four to six weeks, so that’s a bad break for the young man,” Cox said.

“Brenton Payne has also suffered; he has some stress reaction in his shin and will probably miss between two to four weeks.”
