St Kilda defender Dylan Roberton says it will take a team effort to stifle the influence of in-form Adelaide attacking weapons Eddie Betts and Taylor Walker on Sunday.
Both Betts and Walker kicked five goals each against Greater Western Sydney last weekend and have 27 and 24 goals respectively for the season, with the pair part of a formidable Crows attack, which includes Josh Jenkins and Tom Lynch.
Roberton indicated that small lockdown defender Jarryn Geary could get first crack at All Australian small forward Betts, whilst ultra-reliable key defender Sean Dempster may go to Crows captain Taylor Walker.
“Well they’ve got a good forward line, don’t they?” Roberton told Melbourne radio station SEN on Thursday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s clash at Adelaide Oval.
“I think ‘Gears’ and ‘Shinner’ have been in really good form.
“‘Gears’ has been playing really well on the smalls, so he’ll probably get the first look at Eddie. He’ll need a lot of help from us. If the mids get the ball going our way first that will obviously take out his impact.
“We’ll be looking to support whoever plays on him [Walker]. So it won’t just be a one v one because we know how strong ‘Tex’ is and if he’s in the goal square by himself it will be pretty hard for anyone to play on him. So we’ll just be looking to get over and support and put pressure on the ball.”
With the bye weekend around the corner, the 24-year-old father of three admits he won’t be in for a sunny vacation in Byron Bay or Noosa like some of his teammates. Although he concedes his frenetic life at home allows him to leave his troubles at work when he comes home each day.
“I’ll be at home with the three kids so it will be pretty full on anyway. So it won’t be much of a break,” Roberton said.
“Sort of without knowing it, you get home and your mind goes straight onto them. So there’s still a lot to do when you get home. I think it’s obviously a good thing.
“I can’t really remember what it’s like not having kids it’s part of my routine now I think.”
