St Kilda small defender Jarryn Geary says the Saints must continue to build their game around pressure to give themselves the best opportunity of continuing their winning streak.
On the back of last weekend’s pressure factor (pressure points per pressure chance) rating of 1.987 – ranked No. 1 for Round 10 – St Kilda was able to find a way to overcome Fremantle after the Dockers had control of the game.
It was in stark contrast to the West Coast performance at Domain Stadium in Round 8 and an area of the game Geary believes must be present to topple the in-form Crows at Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon.
“Our game is basically built on pressure and if we bring that we feel like we can compete against anyone,” Geary told Adelaide radio station Five AA on Thursday night.
“Three weeks ago against West Coast we really struggled to put pressure any pressure on and we weren’t in the game.
“But the last couple of weeks we’ve been able to do it, get back to Saints pressure and give ourselves the opportunity to be in games.”
The combination of young spearheads Josh Bruce, Paddy McCartin and Tim Membrey inside 50, plus the inclusion of Captain Nick Riewoldt at times has helped the Saints register a pair of winning scores in the last fortnight.
Geary, 27, says the blend up forward is proving to be dangerous, with the setup allowing Riewoldt to thrive higher up the ground this season.
“We’ve got some big boys up there in the forward line now and if we give them enough opportunities we know they’re going to win their one-on-one contests or at least give us an opportunity to lock it in there by bringing it to ground,” Geary said.
“They’ve been really good which has obviously helped 'Rooey' get up the ground and win a bit more of the ball through the midfield.”
