MESSAGE FROM ST KILDA AND DANNY FRAWLEY TO SAINTS SUPPORTERS

Part-time club coach and former Captain, Danny Frawley, today addressed St Kilda staff and players regarding comments made by him and other Triple M commentators about Caroline Wilson last week.

“I wanted to tell them how much I regret making what was a terrible joke and that I am sorry for upsetting many people, including Caroline,” Frawley said.

“I have learned a lot over the past 48-hours and, like many people I suspect, I now have a much better understanding about why this was no joking matter and I put my hand up to say it won’t happen again.

“One of the big lessons was learning that one in six women in Australia are affected by domestic violence – which shocked me to be honest – and it’s important we all know about this.

“I think a positive to come from all this is that we are discussing domestic violence.  

“I have discussed what we said on radio with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum because it has really affected me and I wanted to understand it.

“If those comments about Caroline were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up - I wouldn’t have liked it at all.  

“To anyone who is saying ‘lighten up, it’s just a joke’ they need to understand that what we say matters and jokes like this about women are simply not on.”

Frawley said he has offered to help St Kilda and the AFL in any way in the future to raise awareness of domestic violence issues.

He will also play a key role in hosting programs within St Kilda’s diversity and inclusion strategy.
