St Kilda FC Development Coach Lindsay Gilbee has been appointed senior coach of the Saints’ VFL affiliate Sandringham Zebras.

Gilbee will combine his role as Sandringham coach with his duties at St Kilda, where he has worked for the past three years in a development role.

Sandringham CEO John Mennie welcomed Gilbee’s appointment.

“The Sandringham Football Club is very excited with Linday’s appointment as our senior coach,” Mennie said.

“As a St Kilda development coach he has worked with our coaches and players over the past three years.

“Lindsay is respected by everyone at the Zebras and we look forward to him guiding the club to a very successful season,” he said.

Gilbee said he was looking forward to the new coaching challenge.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity to coach the Zebras and continue working with some of the young players in the Saints and Sandringham system,” Gilbee said.   

GM – Football Performance Jamie Cox said Gilbee has a good grounding to succeed at VFL level.

"After three years as an assistant coach, Lindsay has demonstrated the talent and aptitude that will enable him to manage the Zebras program,” Cox said.

"His ability to care for and connect with players, as well as his experience working with junior and senior footballers in development at the Saints, will stand him in good stead in his new role.   

“This appointment will be of great benefit to both the Sandringham and St Kilda Football Clubs as we align to deliver a seamless player development program from VFL to AFL football,” he said.

A skilful and composed half-back, Gilbee played 206 games for the Western Bulldogs from 2001-2012.

Following his retirement, Gilbee was an expert commentator with ABC Radio and was appointed a full-time development coach with St Kilda at the end of 2013.
