Dominant Demons delight as Saints succumb to third straight loss

Euro-Yroke has stumbled to a powerful Narrm outfit at the MCG, with a few goals late putting the final margin at 38 points.

Narrm has snapped its two-game winning streak to extend Euro-Yroke’s winless run by another week, ousting the visitors at the MCG by 38 points in the closing day of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

Despite a low-scoring opening half — which could have been far greater had the Demons fully seized their opportunities forward — that had the Saints just 12 points adrift at the main change, the red and blue put the match beyond doubt with three goals in almost as many minutes midway through the third term to consolidate the win 14.16 (100) to 9.8 (62).

Jacob van Rooyen’s third-quarter goal to kickstart the Dees’ acceleration to the finish line was one of nine second-half majors; the Saints only mustering five of their own within that period, three which were kicked in the twilight stages with all steam out of the contest.

Max Gawn (34 hit-outs, 27 disposals, 10 clearances, one goal) made short work of the Saints' engine room despite coming close to being ruled out pre-game with calf soreness, while Christian Salem (32 disposals), Adam Tomlinson and Tom McDonald repelled a fair share of the Saints’ advances into attack to concede just nine majors for the afternoon.

Paddy Dow was a positive for Euro-Yroke in his second club outing in what was an otherwise dour affair, Max King led the scoring with three goals, while Mason Wood and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera battled hard in the hopes of igniting their side’s ball movement and transition.

In near-identical circumstances to last week’s defeat to Walyalup, the Saints were cut to pieces in the inside-50s count 67-41, and while the clearance numbers was even by the final siren (34-33), the Demons’ efficiency was unquestionable through the power of Jack Viney, Christian Petracca and Gawn.

Jack Sinclair (30 disposals) was also thrown on-ball to remedy the Saints' midfield troubles of recent weeks, with Liam Henry and Liam Stocker, paired up against Petracca, folding through the mix throughout the afternoon.

The Saints showed promise in the second term to outscore the home outfit three goals to one, with skipper Jack Steele (33 disposals) and King converting at clutch times from set shots to drag themselves back into the contest.

But the Demons prevailed from that point on, with nine players (including key defender Steven May who nailed his first major since 2020) hitting the scoreboard to overcome their opposition in search for its spark.
