Ryan Byrnes

He was our most influential player. He had 34 touches and 18 of those were contested, which is more important as that's been a big focus of his. His ability to get from contest to contest was important as well. As a midfielder, he looked to be running on top of the ground towards the back-end of the game and had two shots on goal for two behinds, so it could have been a really, really good game.

I'm really pleased with how we went and his attitude coming in to play VFL after being in Canberra the night before was really pleasing. It's no surprise he played well. All he can control now is backing it up when we play next, One performance won't get you a game, but putting up two, three, four consistent performances will definitely put the pressure on the AFL boys.

Dean Kent

Kenty's last quarter was really big for us. He kicked 2.1 in the last quarter, was really strong for us ahead of the ball and his work-rate really stood out. He had a good first three quarters, but his last one through his chase and pressuring was really pleasing to see. He's in good form.

Whenever we feel like we need something or even if we want to just inject him into the game, we know we can chuck hm in the centre bounce and get a couple of efforts there. He's so strong and powerful with a 60-metre kick, especially at Blacktown which wasn't a long ground you can get the ball deep inside-50. It's good to have up our sleeves.

Tom Highmore

Tommy was really good, we looked really settled back there and once again had lots of the ball, but he set us up defensively and we just looked safe with him back there. He's a good leader down there and along with Anthony Seaton and Tyson Milne down there really took control of the backline.

We lost some contests defensively, but as a team our defensive shape was pleasing and a lot of that was due to Tom. Same again, he can just keep putting in good performances and if there's need for a change (at senior level) he's definitely ready to go.

Jack Bytel

Jack worked well with Byrnesy and Kenty and a few of the VFL midfielders in Mitch Riordan and Blake Watson. He probably flicked the ball around a little bit too much early on but found a good balance of getting out and getting forward for us.

He's building nicely, Jack, so we just need to keep the improvement going so when there's an opportunity at AFL level he's ready to go. Contest-to-contest running was better this week, but something we can keep making a focus for him going forward just to give him that extra leg-up on the oppo.

Leo Connolly

Leo's first three minutes started like a house on fire. I reckon he had four of his first five touches in the first three or four minutes, was running really well to give us some good options and then it dried up for a little bit.

Leo's a bit of a byproduct of our team ball movement. We obviously want the ball in his hands as much as possible, so we're working on some different ways to help him get the ball, and a lot of that is his work-rate and watching some AFL half-backs on how they can get extra support to contests. Jack Sinclair is someone that Leo really wants to emulate his game on. His running power is starting to improve as well and he's getting to more contests just so we can even up the way he's getting the ball.

Jack Peris

Jack's composure with ball in hand is improving every week and this was probably his best game. A lot was around his contest and same as Leo, his ability to read the cues, go to where the loose ball is and win it back for us, that was really pleasing. We chucked him on the wing in the last quarter and he definitely did not look out of place there, so it might be something we continue to look at going forward just to further his development.

His tackle on centre-wing late in the game was huge. He's got a rugby background growing up in the Northern Territory and he definitely stuck the shoulder and saved potentially an inside-50 against, and who knows what could have happened from there. For a little man he can tackle big.

Jarryn Geary

Gears played the first three quarters on the wing. He had a good game and he's really good at just dong the basics of a wingman: covering an outlet and getting back to help defensively. The feedback from the VFL boys, they just love playing with him. He's so constructive and instructive.

We swapped him at three-quarter time with Jack Peris and the boys just said they loved how safe the backline was when he was there. He's got great flexibility and his attitude has been so good, it's like having an extra coach out there and in meetings. I couldn't be more pleased with how he's applied himself.

Max Heath

Max Heath has shouldered the responsibility of the key ruck over the past fortnight. Photo: Mark Woods, Sandringham Zebras.

It didn't go Maxy's way all game at all, really. He was best-on-ground last week and this was a really good challenge against a really good opposition ruckman. He was probably getting out-bodied and outmuscled a little bit early, and Maxy had the smarts to change up what he was doing and that's a great sign.

He fought back and five tackles for a ruckman is really pleasing. Hopefully with Tom Campbell back this week it'll free him up to play a little bit more forward time because he's played a lot of ruck in the last two weeks and we need to manage that.

For a first-year and someone who's played five games, he's gone really well. The competitive side of things hasn't surprised me, that's been expected, but the cleanliness and ability to impact going forward and leadership with the young kids, it's so pleasing to see.

Oscar Adams

It was Oscar's best game for the year. Stats-wise he had four intercept marks and would have got a few more intercept possessions along the ground. He's starting to read the play really well and backing his decisions to take some space versus worry about his opponent. When he gets a run and jump at the ball he looks really good too.

Still needs to tidy up his disposal, decision-making and execution, but he's given himself good opportunities to help us bounce the ball back outside defensive-50.

Matthew Allison

Matty had a bit of a quieter day this week. Our ball movement hasn't helped him, this week in particular we played pretty straight-line and didn't bring our outside players into the game. His patterns are starting to improve, he just needs to tidy up a few decisions with ball in hand.

We're flicking him forward every now and then and he's looking to improve there. We're starting to see him settle a bit better after a few games in na row on the wing, but we probably would like to see a little bit more impact overall.

Cooper Sharman

Cooper was really disappointed last week with his accuracy, so he put in a lot of work during the week and to kick three straight was really pleasing. He's another one who's a byproduct of our ball movement, so we keep getting him to find multiple ways to get involved. He spent a bit of time along the wing, but for him to get involved on the scoreboard was good to see. It was a step forward for Cooper and no doubt he'll keep going with that.
