FORTY-two venues have been used in AFL/VFL history. From the eight founding members of the league in 1897, St Kilda has played at 31 of them, more than any other foundation club. (Only Richmond has played at more grounds in AFL/VFL history, 32)

The Junction Oval hosted the Saints 580 times between 1897 and 1984, while Moorabbin Oval was St Kilda’s home on 254 occasions between 1965 and 1992.

In five instances, the Saints have played at a ground just once. Yarraville Oval (1942), Manuka Oval (2001), Coburg City Oval (1965), Yallourn Oval (1952) and North Hobart Oval (1991) have all hosted St Kilda for a solitary match.

East Melbourne Cricket Ground, a venue which St Kilda played 27 matches at between 1897 and 1921, no longer exists.

In the same vein, Corio Oval was the home of Geelong Football club between 1878 and 1940 and the Saints played 43 games there. During WWII, the site was required by the military as a training base, and was bulldozed shortly after.

Remarkably, the Saints and Fitzroy played the last AFL/VFL game at four separate venues, they were:

  • Brunswick Street Oval (Round 17, 1996)
  • Moorabbin Oval (Round 20, 1992)
  • Junction Oval (Round 20, 1984) and
  • Toorak Park (Round 10, 1943)

Other interesting St Kilda ground statistics include:

  • Two-time Brownlow medallist Robert Harvey has played at 19 venues, more than any other AFL/VFL player in the history of the game.
  • St Kilda’s most successful ground has been Docklands, winning 63% of their matches there since Round 1, 2000.
  • The Saints’ least successful venue is Victoria Park, a ground which they won just eight matches in 78 games from 1897 to 1993 – a winning percentage of just 9%.
  • The Saints have also played exhibition games overseas twice, once in 1991 and again in 1998.
  • In front of a crowd of 8,500 people, St Kilda took on Geelong in Auckland in 1991. Seven years and five days later, they came up against the Western Bulldogs at The Oval (Now Kia Oval) in London.
  • In round five, the Saints travel to Wellington, New Zealand, for the first ever overseas AFL premiership match. Westpac Stadium will be the 43rd AFL/VFL venue, and St Kilda’s 32nd AFL/VFL ground.
