Goalkicking expert David Wheadon has joined St Kilda as a specialist goalkicking coach, coming on board in a part-time capacity to support the club’s forward line.
The 75-year-old joins the club in what will be his second stint at the Saints, having previously worked with Ross Lyon in 2011.
Wheadon has spent time in a variety of roles at Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond, Essendon and Geelong following his playing career for the Magpies between 1968-1970, and last year published the book The Art of Goalkicking, which thoroughly details one of the game’s most prized and analysed facets.
As part of a short-term succession plan, Wheadon will work alongside Development Coach Brendon Goddard to mentor him in the space, while also supporting the wider program.
“We’re thrilled to have David back at St Kilda to share his knowledge with our playing group,” Acting General Manager of Football David Misson said.
“David’s skillset and expertise on goalkicking is rivalled by very few, and he’s personally overseen the development some of the game’s most noted goalkickers across several decades.
“His inclusion to our program this season will be a great asset and we look forward to learning from him as we continue to improve as a collective.”
Wheadon joins new Head of High Performance Alex Sakadjian in the club’s latest football program appointments, with the latter to commence his role on 1 June.
