Star midfielder Jack Steven conceded the Saints had little answers to combat Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, suggesting that St Kilda didn’t ‘turn up’ to play on Sunday night.

Don Pyke’s side controlled the ball and the scoreboard in the opening quarter, booting six goals to one to put the Crows well down the path towards their 88-point win.

Steven lamented another slow start by St Kilda and indicated that Alan Richardson and the coaching staff would dissect the game forensically with the players before moving on to prepare for next Sunday’s clash with Carlton.

Monday Wash Up: Round 11 v Adelaide

“We just didn’t really turn up to play pretty much from the start. He [Richardson] was obviously disappointed and I think we got pumped in all areas. There’s not much to really say,” Steven told saints.com.au after Sunday’s loss.

“We’ll review it pretty heavily and obviously move on after that and get ready for them [Carlton].”

St Kilda’s review meeting is destined to be far from enjoyable early in the week, although Steven said the learnings taken out of them can be valuable to bounce back quickly.

“It’s pretty depressing. We just see the vision; we know pretty much what we’ve done wrong. We’ll learn from it, we’re a young group, and hopefully implement it this week against Carlton,” Steven said.

Small defender Jarryn Geary was one of only a few Saints who walked off Adelaide Oval without having his colours lowered, with the experienced Saint restricting the influence of All Australian small forward Eddie Betts.

Steven, who was one of the Saints best against the Crows, collecting 31 disposals and 577 metres of gained territory, lauded the performance of Geary, in a game where the Crows provided their forwards with a plethora of opportunities.

“He did a super job against one of the in-form players or forwards (in the AFL). The ball was coming in enough. It was well done by ‘Gears’,” Steven said.
