St Kilda is expected to be one of the busier players of the 2023 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, which kicked off on Monday as all clubs met at Marvel Stadium.

The Saints are in talks with a handful of clubs over ingoing and outgoing talent, hoping to lock away deals before next Wednesday’s deadline.

Ahead of his first player movement period as St Kilda List Manager, Stephen Silvagni spoke to STK Media at Marvel Stadium.

Silvagni on potential player movement…

We’ve got a couple of players who’ve nominated St Kilda in Liam Henry and Paddy Dow, so over the next ten days we’re looking to get those deals done.

Then we’ve got a couple of players looking to move on in Jade Gresham and Nick Coffield. With Nick, we’re looking to do a trade and with Gresh it’s having a look at what our compensation will be and then decide whether we want to match it and try trade or convince Jade to stay at our footy club.

Silvagni on when deals will get done…

We’re talking on some deals at the moment that look like they should be done in the next couple of days but I think clubs are holding off just to see where other compensation picks might be placed in the draft and what else other clubs are doing.

Silvagni on potential pick swaps…

We’re open to anything with our picks. If we can improve getting up in our draft order or splitting picks where we know we’ll get a couple of quality players, we’ll do that.

Silvagni on attracting talent…

We’ve got a quality coach in Ross Lyon and a really good young list of players. I think when players who are looking to move clubs see the talent of the young players coming through the door, that certainly makes the club exciting and one people want to go to. That’s pleasing being a St Kilda supporter.

Silvagni on preparing for the AFL Draft…

We’ve just come through the (draft) combine where we’ve interviewed close to 30 players across two days. Our recruiting department worked really hard to get all the profiles together and it’s the second or third time we’ve interviewed these players. There’s a fair bit of work to be done though, so that will happen over the course of the trade period and the lead-in to the draft.
