St Kilda key forward Tim Membrey believes the Saints are gradually getting back to their best as the whips start cracking ahead of the race to September.

After a poor month around the mid-season bye, St Kilda has won their last three games to sit inside the top eight following the drought-breaking win in Perth last Sunday.

Membrey has also returned to form across the last few weeks, averaging 14.7 possessions, 6.3 marks and two goals in the wins over North Melbourne, Gold Coast and Fremantle.

“When those three weeks (the losses) were happening we were going away from our dare with the footy, we weren’t necessarily taking the game on as much as what we were (earlier in the season),” Membrey told Melbourne radio station SEN on Thursday morning.

“At the moment I think we’re getting that back. The coaches are always pushing for us to play our way, keep backing our method in and that’s to take the game on and be bold with the footy.

“We are starting to get that back into our game which is good. If we can build that in the next few weeks and find some form there’s no reason why we can’t go deep into September.”

Rebounding defender Jimmy Webster will leave a hole in defence over the next fortnight after he was handed a two-match ban for making contact with Nick Suban’s eye on Sunday.

Membrey said the Tasmanian, who has established himself as an important cog in St Kilda’s back six in the last 18 months, is bitterly disappointed with the undisciplined act.

“It was a bit of a brain fade from Jimmy. He’s actually really disappointed in himself,” Membrey said.

“He’s a very important player for our team. Hopefully the next two weeks can go quickly and we can get him back out there as soon as possible.”
