Wheelchair sides through to qualifying finals, Smith scores 100 goals... again

St Kilda’s two Wheelchair Football sides will enter their respective finals campaigns in second position on the ladder as a tilt at another premiership commences next fortnight.

St Kilda’s two Wheelchair Football sides will enter their respective finals campaigns in second position on the ladder as a tilt at another premiership commences next fortnight.

Both the Saints’ VWFL and CWFL sides will face Richmond in qualifying finals at the State Netball Hockey Centre on Sunday 21 July. Victory will advance either side through to the Grand Final, while a qualifying finals loss will force a do-or-die preliminary final the following week to keep premiership hopes alive.

St Kilda’s CWFL side clinched the competition’s inaugural premiership last season and will look to go back-to-back in a few weeks’ time, while the VWFL Saints secured the silverware as part of the fast-tracked 2020 season.

While there has been no shortage of contributors between both brigades, the powerhouse forward efforts of VWFL captain Ryan Smith have been unmatched, last week notching up his 100th goal for the season to comprehensively claim his third league goalkicking medal (2019, 2022, 2024).

Smith surpassed the 10-goal mark in six out of eight occasions, including a whopping 21 against Hawthorn as St Kilda raced away to a record 126-point win in Round 4, 17 majors against Richmond in Round 7 and 15 over Hawthorn in Round 9 which culminated in a 165-point triumph.

CWFL counterpart and Trent Johnson has led just as superbly in front of goal with 44 for the season to finish runner-up in the competition’s goalkicking tally. After registering one of his side’s seven goals in the opening round match-up against Essendon Community, the key target went on to score every one of the side’s next 32 majors across seven weeks before a handy pair from Nathan Wilburn interrupted the impressive streak.

In other highlights across the season, RSEA Park played host to the competitions’ inaugural Spud’s Game fixture, which eventuated in two impressive finishes against Collingwood, which both fell the way of the red, white and black.

St Kilda’s VWFL line-up banked a comfortable 26-point win headlined by 11 goals Smith, while the preceding CWFL squad were forced into a dour finish against Collingwood Community to hold onto their slender five-point lead and complete the Saints’ double triumph.

The dates for the VWFL and CWFL proceeding finals will be confirmed shortly.
