At the end of the 2018 Season, a 2-0 start to the following year would have been scoffed at.
But Saints fans will have plenty to smile about following their side’s 11-point victory over Essendon at Marvel Stadium, with Alan Richardson’s men piecing together a promising performance in front of nearly 45,000 spectators.
Much was made of the Bombers’ perceived lack of effort from last week, and the Saints certainly weren’t going to be complacent in theirs.

Pressure was at the forefront of St Kilda’s game – particularly in the opening half – and was crucial in stifling their opposition’s fluidity and causing lapses in their concentration.
But wayward kicking at goal, a release in pressure in the third term and a subsequent resurgence from John Worsfold’s men nearly saw the Saints surrender their lead, however the red, white and black held firm to secure the four points.
Jade Gresham (25 disposals), Jack Billings (28) and Jack Newnes (25) found themselves with plenty of the footy, while Jack Steele was at his pressure-laden best alongside Jack Sinclair, who finished with a game-high nine tackles.
Josh Bruce and Tim Membrey topped the goalkicking list with two apiece, with the former going above and beyond – literally – with a high-flying leap over Michael Hurley in the second term.
And no matter what size or shape, the Saints delivered in spades.
Incoming ruckman Rowan Marshall impressed with his mobility and eight tackles, while at the other end of the spectrum, Jack Lonie was a constant thorn in the Bombers’ side through his pressure acts across the ground.

A clean bill of health will carry the Saints across to Round 3, with a tough challenge against the in-form Fremantle at Optus Stadium awaiting next Sunday.
