Sandringham coach Aaron Hamill offered some insight into the performances of the 13 St Kilda-listed players following the Zebras’ 24-point loss to Werribee.
Jake Carlisle
15 disposals, 10 kicks, seven marks
“He looked pretty sharp, Jake, and particularly early I thought he was good for us. It depended on how he felt in terms of playing out the full game, but he got through and that was the main thing. He’ll be discussed at team selection, but we’ll let his body cool down and see how he pulls up.”
Oscar Clavarino
16 disposals, 10 kicks, seven marks, one goal
“We like how Oscar’s developing for us and he’s starting to get continuity in his game now. His contest work is improving and his positioning and game sense is really good for us. He saved us a couple of times there early in the game with his bodywork, so he’s going really well and we like the way he’s going.”
Nick Coffield
21 disposals, 10 kicks, three tackles
“I thought Nick’s second half was better. We really liked his positioning in the second half and some of his use in contest work was at the level that’s required, so we need him to keep building, but we don’t want him to fluctuate with that effort. We just need him to be consistent and that grunt is where it needs to be.”

Dan Hannebery
23 disposals, 11 kicks, five tackles
“‘Hanners’ played 85 minutes, so that was pleasing. I thought his contribution was solid for us and when we could get first use, he made the most of it. He’s getting through well with speed and his body positioning was what we’d expect from him, so he was good for us. He won’t be too far away, he’ll be discussed during the week.”
Darragh Joyce
17 disposals, 16 kicks, 10 marks
“I thought Darragh was good all day. We asked him to take the game on in the end and that was pleasing, so I think Darragh showed some good signs. We liked his positioning and we’ve just got to get him to transfer that [into] AFL level. His positioning at VFL level is very good and we know that he’s a very good player at this level. We liked his contest work too and he gets team defence, so I thought it was one of his better games.”
Max King
Two disposals, one mark, one goal
“The news is promising. It was playing on our melon for a fair bit of the day, and when that news filtered through we were rapt.”
Doulton Langlands
16 disposals, four marks, three tackles
“Again, Doulton is improving every time he’s playing. We started him as an inside mid and he got to work for us in there. Some of his wing patterns were really good as well. He’s improving in his decision-making, he’s improving in his skills and his contested work is very good. Him and Ben [Paton] were always going to play today [after making the trip to Townsville].”
Ben Long
14 disposals, 11 kicks, six marks, two tackles
“I thought Longy showed some really good signs there as a half-back. His positioning was good, he gave us some good run and drive and he’s a really good decision-maker there, so we were rapt with his performance. [Ben’s speed] gave us a little bit of rebound and little of bounce out of there.”
Jack Mayo
Eight disposals, two marks, six kicks
“Jack’s improving, leaning and he’s only new. He’s improving in terms of his strength as well. Jack’s got a fair way to go to develop – he’s quite immature from a body point of view – but we know that. He’s only going to get better as he plays and we get more minutes into him and then we can review strongly and move on.”
Ben Paton
27 disposals, 11 kicks, five marks, four tackles
“’Pato’ was probably one of our better players in terms of his contribution. On the wing and inside he moved well, he made good decisions, he was tough inside and some of his patterns were very good for us.”
Bailey Rice
17 disposals, 14 kicks, six marks, eight tackles, one goal
“He had some very good moments in the game, Bailey. He helped set us up at times with entries and he helped defend strongly. I thought his contest work was outstanding, but his ability to set us up and bounce out of our back-half was pleasing.
Sam Rowe
12 disposals, four tackles, 26 hit-outs
“I liked Sammy in the ruck and up forward. It was a real Achilles heel of ours not being able to get the job done up front after King went down – 14 intercept marks isn’t going to cut it – but we liked what Rowe was able to do in front of the ball. Him and Kye [Answerth] were flipping in the ruck, but I thought after being out for three weeks he contributed well and he’ll be quite pleased with getting through the game.”
Robbie Young
10 disposals, seven tackles, two goals
“I thought his first half was pretty good. We liked his front-line support and his pressure was where we’d expect it from Robbie. We think he’s quite competent at ground level, we like what he can do and he showed that he can get in front of the contest – we just didn’t get it to ground enough to get him to use his strengths.”
