An impressive display and a win on the board last week against the Western Bulldogs has St Kilda on the up.
Now, Brett Ratten’s Saints will be gunning for back-to-back wins, with a victory against Melbourne firmly in sight.
Victory over the Demons in Round 5 of this season was the last time St Kilda recorded consecutive wins, with the red, white and black unable to string together successive triumphs from that point on.
GAME DAY INFORMATION: St Kilda vs Melbourne
Melbourne took the fight right up to West Coast last week in Alice Springs, going down by just 13 points – several costly misses proving to be their downfall in the end.
And with Simon Goodwin conceding that frustration has been building within the Demons’ camp, it leaves them as a dangerous opposition heading into Saturday night.
As has been all season, Max Gawn looms as the biggest threat – both literally and figuratively – to dampen the Saints’ spirits.
Max Gawn and Rowan Marshall - along with Collingwood's Brodie Grundy - have arguably been the most influential ruckmen this season.
Thanks to Gawn’s dominance in the ruck, the Dees are second in the league for total hit-outs, averaging 17 more hit-outs than their opposition per game.
More pertinent however has been the number of hit-outs to advantage (226).
The two-time All Australian leads the league in this statistic, with 35% of his total taps landing safely into the hands of his fellow Demons.
It’s translated into their sheer accumulation of inside-50s, for which they rank second in the competition with an average of 57 entries per game, with Clayton Oliver and James Harmes the biggest beneficiaries.
JOYCE RE-SIGNS: Young Saint inks two-year deal
The midfield duo has been largely consistent for the Demons amid a disappointing year, placing in their side’s top-two respectively for contested possessions (279, 189), total disposals (511, 419), defensive-half pressure acts (179, 154) and inside-50s (85, 75).
With the pair able to penetrate the scoreboard and win plenty of ball in the process, shutting down the two key Dees will be instrumental in securing the four points.
And with skipper Nathan Jones, Bayley Fritsch and Jack Viney adding to the mix, Melbourne’s midfield brigade nevertheless looms as a force to be reckoned with, despite the lack of wins to complement it.
Unfortunately for Melbourne, the accruing of multiple entries hasn’t resulted in clean-cut dominance on the scoreboard.
Much like the Saints, scoring has been a problem all season for the Dees.
The loss of Tom McDonald to a knee injury has only compounded the issue, leaving the Demons with less-experienced options up forward and 16th in the league for total points scored (1246) as a result.
WATCH: Doulton's Day
Jayden Hunt tops the Demons’ goalkicking (19) and has been their most reliable target, while Christian Petracca leads the pack for score involvements (99) and has 18 majors of his own.
A new role for Angus Brayshaw is also something the Saints will be wary of heading into Saturday night.
The versatile midfielder was tasked with a tagging role last week, successfully keeping Elliot Yeo to 16 disposals – eight below his season average.
Angus Brayshaw showcased his ability to play a variety of roles in Alice Springs after keeping Elliot Yeo quiet.
Jack Billings could be next on his hit-list.
Billings starred the last time the two sides met, racking up 28 disposals and jagging two goals in the emphatic 40-point victory.
The 23-year-old has been in sublime touch this season, yet with Hunter Clark also enjoying a superb run of form, he too could be on Brayshaw's radar.
In the defensive end, the Dees undoubtedly have the stocks, but have been scored against heavily throughout the year.
MATCH REWIND: Saints down Demons in Queen's Birthday Classic
Rebounding defender Christian Salem has been the highlight of the Melbourne backline, leading the way for rebound-50s (72) and metres gained (6683) to get the Demons out of danger.
Melbourne, however, average eight less rebounds per game against their opposition to rank 17th in the league.
Neville Jetta could have his hands full with a rampant Jack Lonie following his lively four-goal haul against the Bulldogs, while the returning Oscar McDonald (illness) or Sam Frost will have quite the challenge against Tim Membrey.
Tim Membrey kicks true against the Demons in Round 5 of the 2019 Season.
The Saints’ No. 28 has just come off the back of a four-goal bag against the Dogs, and was close to unstoppable the last time the Dees and Saints butted heads, with four goals, eight marks (four contested) and 12 disposals to his name.
Membrey has kicked 23 goals from eight games against the Demons, with an average return of just under three goals per game.
St Kilda has already added one successful entry to its new era.
Another victory will make for great reading.
