AFLW star Cat Phillips will play her first game in the red, white and black this Sunday 5 May.
In what looms as a huge double-header, Phillips will run out with the Southern Saints to kick off the VFLW season against heavyweights Collingwood.
And boasting some recent big-name AFLW recruits, Peta Searle’s side will be hoping to start their campaign with a bang after a gruelling pre-season.
MOORABBIN DOUBLE-HEADER: Footy returns to hallowed turf this Sunday
Ex-Demon Phillips signed with St Kilda during the 2019 AFLW Trade Period, crediting St Kilda’s AFLW head coach Searle with her acquisition.
“It all happened very quickly, I really loved everything that Peta (Searle) had to tell me about the club,” Phillips told saints.com.au.
“I think getting excited by the passion that Peta brought and the thought of being involved in a brand new team coming into the AFLW really put me over the line.”
AFLW TRADE WRAP: Peta Searle's squad is taking shape
Originally a convert from the relatively obscure sport of Ultimate Frisbee, Phillips’ incredible athleticism has held her in good stead across all three AFLW seasons at Melbourne.
“That’s something that I’m definitely hoping to bring here – my leadership and my experience – having played in the AFLW with Melbourne,” she said.
I love spending time in the midfield, working hard out on the wing and developing my game with that running base load at the bottom, and then being able to add onto that will be really helpful.”
Following the women’s game at 12pm, St Kilda’s bevy of exciting AFL draftees will take the field for the Saints-affiliated Zebras at 2.10pm, pitted against bayside neighbours Frankston.
Thousands of fans are expected to converge on RSEA Park with a host of activities planned for the whole family.
