Just four months ago, Callum Wilkie was sitting in his Adelaide CBD office, living out a normal life as an accountant.

On Sunday, he’ll make his debut for the St Kilda Football Club.

It started on a Friday afternoon back in late November, when the then-22-year-old received a phone call that would change his life forever.

An understandably whirlwind few months ensued for Wilkie, who uprooted his life in his South Australian hometown to pursue the AFL dream.

The North Adelaide premiership star was forced to do it the hard way having been overlooked in the 2014 National Draft, but his belief never wavered.

“I know I’ve worked bloody hard since juniors, and it was always in my head that I could make it,” he told saints.com.au on his first day at the club.

And make it he has.

Wilkie got the nod from senior coach Alan Richardson late on Thursday afternoon, who interrupted a weights session to break the long-awaited news.

“I was just absolutely ecstatic, I can’t wait to get out there with the boys,” he said.

It’s been an absolute whirlwind over the last couple of months. Coming over from the SANFL and winning a premiership, and then now being on an AFL list and getting the chance to debut this week … it’s unbelievable.”

Sunday will see Wilkie run out alongside fellow mature-age recruit Matty Parker, as the pair pull on the red, white and black for the first time.

For both debutants, the chance confirms their long-held belief that they could make it to the big-time.
