Inaugural Southern Saints captain Georgia Walker says she is ‘over the moon’ to be appointed to the role ahead of the
The former Vic Country and Dandenong Stingrays skipper will be supported by vice-captain Steph Binder in 2018, with the club announcing the appointments on the same day they signed a five-year sponsorship deal with Reflex.
“I was in pure shock and I shed a few tears. To be recognised as a key leader in the team is just incredible,” Walker told saints.com.au following the Southern Saints’ leadership announcement.
“You don’t go to training to or come into a team expecting this type of stuff to happen. So to be recognised by a new group of girls and by the coaches is just incredible.
“I’m so honoured and over the moon to be appointed as captain.
Walker, who first started playing football when she was in prep and has been in love with the game ever since, describes herself as a strong communicator who uses her voice to help others, both on and off the field.
“I’m a very talkative leader and try to be very encouraging,” she said.
“I’ve been playing for quite a while so I think what I bring to the role is the experience I’ve had playing compared to some of the other girls in the team.
“I’m able to help on the field and be an extra voice and help instruct the girls out there to have a good game as well. But also off the field, I like to think I lead in the way I prepare.”
Walker, 19, says she has thoroughly enjoyed diving into the Southern Saints program and working alongside trailblazer Peta Searle, who will coach the Saints in the first stage of their journey towards entering the AFLW competition in 2020.
“The program has been incredible, it truly has,” she said.
“The calibre of coaches we have is outstanding and the support we’ve had from the club and the men as well; we’ve just been welcomed with open eyes.
“I’m so excited to come to training each night and I would come every night if I could.”
