The AFL says St Kilda midfielder Koby Stevens could face suspension despite being awarded a free kick for Friday night’s dumping tackle on Greater Western Sydney’s Nathan Wilson.

Stevens faces at least a fine after pinning Wilson, then slinging him into the turf.

He was awarded a free kick for holding the ball, but Wilson had to have a concussion test, which he passed.

Stevens will be worried about the precedent set by the one-game ban for Geelong’s Sam Menegola for his Round 4 sling tackle on Hawthorn star Luke Hodge.

The colossal team that shook ‘arrogant’ Giants

This was the scalp St Kilda needed to take — and, boy, did the Saints take it.

After 11 straight Friday night losses, the Saints caused a boilover to kick off Round 7, upsetting the GWS Giants by 23 points at Etihad Stadium.

Despite the brilliance of the Saints, the Giants had the ascendancy for most of the game, but conceded six goals to one in the final term to be overrun by a hungrier Saints outfit.

There were some concerning signs for the Giants throughout the game, including an argument between Jeremy Cameron and Heath Shaw, as well as a big defensive hole opening up that allowed Saint Blake Acres to mark and goal, sparking a finger-pointing fiesta.

St Kilda is racing up the ladder thanks to smart drafting and trading

There are two components in building a strong AFL list.

The first is quality drafting and making the most of early selections and the second is finding established players from opposition clubs who can fill your gaps.

St Kilda’s build in recent years appears to have nailed both components and while good recycled players who aren’t attracted with big money are often hard to come by, the Saints seem to be making the right choices time and again.

Eight players who took to the field against Greater Western Sydney on Friday night started their AFL careers at other AFL clubs and many have quickly become shining lights in the Saints’ line-up.
