Jack Steele knew St Kilda possessed plenty of talent when he decided to move from the Giants at the end of last season. But he admits he has been surprised by the level of depth and quality at Linen House Centre.
The hard-nosed midfielder joined the Saints in exchange for a future second-round pick after playing 17 games in two seasons at the game's youngest franchise.
“It did surprise me when I first came here,” Steele told reporters at his first press conference since crossing from Greater Western Sydney last October.
“Just people who I hadn’t really heard of, who hadn’t played games like first or second year’s I hadn’t seen much of, they really surprised me with their professionalism and their skill on and off the field.”
Steele, 21, made the decision to change clubs after being starved of opportunity during his time in western Sydney.
The Giants academy graduate, who was one of St Kilda’s key contributors against Carlton at Ikon Park last weekend, said while it’s clear the Giants have a bright future, he believes the Saints are the perfect fit for him at this point of his career.
“It was still difficult (to make the decision) because they (GWS) are a good club and there is something good for them around the corner,” Steele said.
“In terms of opportunity I thought this was the best club to get my opportunity and it is a club on the rise and I still think it’s the best fit for me and I’m glad to be here.”
