PADDY McCartin will replace Nick Riewoldt in St Kilda’s side if the skipper is not fit to play, says Alan Richardson.

The 2014 number one draft pick, who played two games earlier this season, flew to Sydney on the weekend as the travelling emergency following a string of fruitful VFL performances.

While Riewoldt is still considered a chance to overcome calf tightness for Maddie’s Match, McCartin’s recent form suggests he is better prepared for his second crack at senior footy following a last-minute debut against Collingwood.

“I’ve been on record as saying he came in a little bit early in the piece,” Richardson said on Thursday morning.

“The team needed him to, given the fact Nick was out and we have a few experienced players who weren’t quite ready at that stage.

“Paddy has been in really strong form. We are keen for Paddy to get another opportunity so he would be the one that would come in.”

Meanwhile, fellow 2014 draftee and Vic Country teammate Hugh Goddard appears to be on the cusp of an AFL debut.

The key position player, who has played in defence and attack this year for Sandringham, is pushing hard for a spot and further pressed his claims last Sunday in difficult conditions.

Goddard took seven marks and collected 16 disposals in the hard-fought win in conditions not normally conducive for tall marking players.

“Hugh has been in good form,” Richardson said.

“It was an incredibly challenging day for the VFL team against Coburg and he was pretty strong again.

“He’s right in the mix. We’ve been reasonably happy with our backs but he is certainly heading in the right direction.”
