MIDFIELDER Maverick Weller has capped off his first season in the Saints leadership group by winning the Lenny Hayes Player Trademark Award.

Each week the playing groups present the game ball to a player who has stood tough for the team and exemplified the Saints Man trademark.

This is not necessarily who kicks the most goals or wins the most possessions, but rather who demonstrates the values of the Saints Man.

The award is named after Lenny Hayes, who for 297 games and 15 years illustrated these values.

“Mav has been acknowledged by his peers as the player who consistently puts the team in front of himself,” senior coach Alan Richardson told SAINTS.com.au.

“He plays with real aggression, providing enormous energy to the group.”

Weller, who played 32 games for the Gold Coast Suns before arriving at St Kilda as a rookie before the 2014 season, has played a further 36 matches for St Kilda.

The 23-year-old missed just two games this year and averaged 17 disposals and five tackles per outing – including 11 against GWS in round one. Only David Armitage and Jack Steven laid more tackles than Weller.
