THE story of St Kilda’s greatest day will be the latest to be told in a series of documentaries from AFL Media.
The Saints’ only premiership victory has been profiled in AFL Media’s Final Story series and will be premiered this week.
The documentary features interviews with key figures of the day including St Kilda’s Barry Breen, Kevin “Cowboy” Neale, Brian Sierakowski and Ian Synman as well as Collingwood’s Des Tuddenham, Kevin Rose and Wayne Richardson.
Director Peter Dickson has also drawn on material from a previous interview with the late Darrel Baldock who captained the Saints on that special September afternoon.
There is also audio from coach Allan Jeans’ famous three quarter-time speech that is sure to have fans of all clubs inspired.
Some of football’s most famous lines emanated from this day – “kick it to the boundary line”, “I tipped this” and “25 minutes to make a name for yourself like you’ve never made before” are all part of football folklore and this documentary perfectly captures the day and the events leading up to it.
The Saints have previously featured in the series when its Grand Final loss to Hawthorn in 1971 featured in the first year of the documentaries in 2011.
Other Grand Finals to have been profiled include 1981, 1991, 2001, 1990, 1984 and 1975.
This year’s series includes the 1980 Grand Final which was screened last week, as well as the 1989 epic encounter between Hawthorn and Geelong which will be shown next week.
The Final Story 1966 airs on Channel 9 this Thursday, September 12 at 10.30pm and also at 12.30pm on Sunday, September 15.
