It was the textbook front-and-square that had Saints fans everywhere off the couch.

An off-hands ball from Rowan Marshall landing perfectly in the lap of a speeding Dan Butler, who like Moses, parted a sea of Bulldogs and sped towards goal.

It was the ultimate highlight and the perfect showing of the new Saint’s skillset, and would have been even better had the Sherrin not been marked by Jack Billings – rightly – on the goal line.

“You don’t get those crumbs too often, so I was a bit flat he didn’t let it through!” Butler told The Hot Breakfast on Triple M.

Butler ended St Kilda's sensational night out with 14 disposals, eight score involvements, six tackles and two goals as the red, white and black raced away to a 39-point victory over the Western Bulldogs.

As arguably the Saints’ most unsung recruit from its blockbuster trade period last season, the former Premiership Tiger proved his importance to the line-up in last night’s electric display.

Butler joined fellow acquisitions Zak Jones, Bradley Hill, Dougal Howard and Paddy Ryder in Sunday's match-winning efforts, along with Dan Hannebery, who was particularly strong after an injury-troubled 2019.

“Obviously there are a lot of new players in and it’s a bit of a different look to last year, but we’re just really pleased with how we played last night,” Butler said.

“Jonesy in particularly was really hard at it as we’ve seen from his playing days at Sydney.

Butler’s role hasn’t changed a great deal after crossing over from Punt Road, with his work-rate at half-forward and manic forward pressure now an integral part of the Saints’ new gameplan.

The 24-year-old registered a game-high four tackles inside-50, and also topped the stat in Round 1 with six.

“Not much has changed, but it’s just awesome being around a new club and under Max King’s feet,” Butler said.

“I might be out of a job in a couple of years if he keeps marking them and not dropping them!”

Butler will no doubt be keeping busy next week when the Saints come up against Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday, 20 June.
