Sandringham has continued its impressive start to the 2014 season with a comprehensive 58-point victory over the Casey Scorpions on Sunday at Casey Fields.
Displaying a ferocious level of pressure, including 31 tackles in the first quarter to keep the home team scoreless, Sandringham were in control for the entire game as they lead from start to finish.
Sandringham senior coach Simon McPhee was thrilled with the intensity that the team played with throughout the game.
“There’s always a big emphasis on defensive efforts; you create a lot of your scoring from your turnovers,” McPhee said.
“We knew we were going to be in for a hard game and Casey is very even around the ground, to beat a team like Casey you have to work hard and defence is a big part of achieving that.”
In a game where team as a collective was the star of the show, Blake Acres was one of the more influential players on the ground, regularly finding himself in scoring chains.
“He’s going really well and getting more consistent with every game,” McPhee said.
“He’s a young guy and he’s still got some things to learn but it’s just really exciting to see him playing good footy.”
Now sitting on three wins and a draw with the reigning premiers, McPhee noted that there is an air of excitement amongst the team.
“It’s exciting to win some games and everyone is really positive right now amongst the team,” McPhee said.
“The challenge for us is to continue to keep the pressure on; we really want to improve our performance every week and I think we’ve been able to do that which is very pleasing.”
Sandringham will next play Essendon at 2pm on Sunday 4 May where the Zebras will host their first home game at Trevor Barker Beach Oval for the 2014 season.
