SECOND year Saint Daniel Markworth has signed a contract extension tying him to the club until at least the end of 2014.

The news comes as Markworth continues his recovery from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, which required a knee reconstruction in the pre-season.

His initial contract was due to expire at the end of this season, but the Saints have made the extension as he makes his recovery.

Markworth is yet to play a senior game after he was drafted from the Calder Cannons with pick 35 at the 2011 draft.

“I’ve signed on for another year after this one. It gives me a bit of security and I can concentrate on my rehab and getting back next year,” Markworth told saints.com.au

“They’ve been really supportive. Ever since it happened they’ve said the security is always going to be there so once it’s down on paper it is very reassuring. It’s good now to concentrate on the rehab and hopefully play some good footy in 2014.”

Markworth has been using his recovery time to focus on his biomedicine studies at the University of Melbourne and has also been gleaning advice from teammates Lenny Hayes, Sean Dempster and James Gwilt who have all been through knee reconstructions.

“I’ve had a chat to all three of them and there is not much you can say when it happens but they are always there for a chat when I need them,” he said.

And as for the question he has been asked every day since his injury, Markworth said he is pleased with his recovery.

“The knee is going really well so everything is on track,” he said.

“I’m running around and getting fit now so once I’m out on the track it is all positive.”
