Several Saints have continued their press for a place in October following notable performances in today’s scratch match against Brisbane at Yeronga.
St Kilda held a two-goal advantage at half-time, before the in-form Lions snared three quick-fire majors in the last term to come away with the chocolates.
Despite winning the territory battle for most of the game, Robbie Chancellor’s 16-man side weren’t able to fully capitalise on the scoreboard, especially in the second half with no rotations in warm conditions.
Shane Savage was a standout in the near-30-degree heat, with his defensive efforts, run to attack the ball and clean use adding another name to Brett Ratten’s list of potential defenders ahead of the club’s imminent finals campaign.
The 29-year-old was joined by youngsters Leo Connolly, Jack Bytel and Ryan Byrnes, along with experienced backmen Jimmy Webster and Dylan Roberton as the Saints’ best for the afternoon.
Byrnes and Bytel dominated the midfield in the opening half, with ruckman Ryan Abbott well on top of the ruck and providing the young mids first use from siren-to-siren.
Connolly also benefitted with minutes in the midfield, piecing together several impressive moments in the contest in-between his stints up forward.
The Gippsland recruit has been tried in all areas of the ground this season, amplifying his football nous and providing damaging footwork on both sides of the body as a result.
Webster took another step towards returning to his best through his hard running and tidy use out of defence, while Roberton’s leadership, experience and composure shone through.
St Kilda’s future scratch matches will be determined following Saturday’s elimination final result against the Western Bulldogs.
