Gun St Kilda forward Caitlin Greiser didn't have far to turn for a training partner in lockdown this year.   

"My boyfriend and I were doing the running and gym program together … it made it a bit easier because a lot of the other girls had to do it by themselves," Greiser told womens.afl.

"We used the Strava (running) app so as a group we (Saints teammates) could all see what we were doing, and it was a really good motivator.

"He was keeping time and everything, so I only had to focus on the running."

Fresh off a winning the Saints' best and fairest in a four-way tie in her maiden AFLW season, Greiser is far from content with being a one-hit wonder.

The 21-year-old, who has earned the 'G-Train' nickname, bagged 10 goals from six games in 2020 and is only getting started.

Greiser's 2020 AFLW Highlights

"Personally, I want to get my fitness back up to standard that it needs to be," Greiser said about of her focus ahead of 2021. 

"My fitness is different to other girls' fitness… I'm more of a fast-paced player compared to long distance. (It's about) quick bursts and I want to keep getting fitter, be as strong as I can to beat my opponents and continue running out games."

A booming Greiser goal clinched the Saints' breakthrough AFLW victory against Melbourne last year, adding to the symmetry of the moniker she shares with former Saint and dual Coleman medallist Fraser Gehrig.But the Saints may not be able to lay claim to it.

"The girls have started calling me that from as soon as I got down to the (Southern Saints) VFL squad at the end of 2018," Greiser said.

"It started in 2018 at Melbourne Uni with (coach) Scott Gowans when I first got into footy (after a career in soccer) and then it took off with the girls down there.

"Then when I joined the Saints with (coach) Peta Searle it continued from there when they asked what my nickname was. So now I get 'G-Train' or 'G'… sometimes they'll call me Caitlin but it's so weird to hear my name down at the club because most people go with 'G-Train'.

"I'm definitely embracing it and I absolutely love it, it's so awesome to have that especially because of Fraser and all the hard work he did when he was playing.

"I'm really hoping to keep the nickname up and make sure I live up to it for all the supporters because I know it means a lot to everyone."

Greiser could soon be turning the tables on the running programs as she zeroes in on a career in teaching.

The spearhead has this year completed a Bachelor of PE and Sports Science while working in after-school care and will begin a Masters of Secondary Teaching next year.
