Robert Harvey’s magnificent deeds spanned a club record 383 games. Along the way he booted 215 goals and one of the most memorable was a dazzling effort in 1995 which won a game against Geelong at the MCG.
St Kilda entered the Round 15 game against Geelong at the MCG as outsiders, with the Cats sitting in second place on the ladder, just behind an all-conquering Carlton side.
The Sunday game opened predictably enough with the Cats holding a three point lead at the first change.
But the match was turned on its head when St Kilda slammed on seven second-quarter goals to take a 25-point lead into the half-time break.
St Kilda identified Gary Ablett as their biggest threat and they went about shutting him down, as well as restricting the Cats’ midfield output.
Yet as much as they tried, they couldn’t stop Ablett, who booted six goals.
In the midfield the Saints had more success, where Steven Sziller had the big job on Gary Hocking, so often the nemesis for St Kilda in the 1990s.
Sziller won that battle, apart from a short burst in the last quarter when Hocking nearly got Geelong over the line.
Rod Keogh and Nathan Burke also had tagging jobs on Paul Couch and Liam Pickering.
With the key Cats shut down, Nicky Winmar and Kristian Bardsley were able to run free.
Stewart Loewe proved too good for Ben Graham but was eventually contained by Steven Handley, and when the Cats produced a late surge it was Winmar who kept St Kilda going, along with the irrepressible Harvey.
Geelong pushed to within a point of the Saints, then it came to a piece of Harvey magic to stave off the fast finish.
From a ball-up on the half forward flank, the ball is tapped towards the boundary and seems headed for the line, but is snatched by Harvey who feints a handpass to his left as Geelong’s Sean Simpson closes in.
A quick shuffle of the hips and Harvey’s twinkle toes spirit him along the boundary line while former teammate Simpson disappears from the picture.
A couple of steps and Harvey fires off the deciding goal from 35 metres out on the boundary line. Saints are home by eight points.
Sean Simpson recalls the game and that last goal vividly.
“I remember Harvs played that game with crook ribs and he wore a wetsuit under his jumper. Buddha Hocking helped me a bit that day by running into him whenever he had the chance!
“He just skipped around me as if I was on a treadmill, but he did that to plenty of others over the years. I spent the whole day on him and I reckon we ran about 16 kilometres."
