Tim turns back time as Saints outclass Eagles, fears for gun recruit

Tim Membrey has led St Kilda's charge over West Coast with five majors, however a knee injury to Liam Henry could cast a cloud over the 72-point triumph.

Tim Membrey has wound back the clock to steer St Kilda towards a 72-point victory over a flat West Coast in Bradley Hill’s 250th game, however it may have come at the cost of a suspected knee injury to star recruit Liam Henry.

The key forward jagged five majors as the Saints piled on seven final-quarter majors to break open the floodgates, but had his hand in plenty of others earlier to finish with a career-best 23 disposals and 10 score involvements to see his side through 17.11 (113) to 6.5 (41).

St Kilda outhunted, out-pressured and outclassed their opposition from the opening bounce and - save for a 15-minute patch from the visitors in the third term - comprehensively outplayed their opposition to bank their largest win of the season.

But the elation of such a triumph could quickly be undercut depending on the severity of Henry’s left knee injury, which occurred midway through the third quarter whilst pirouetting past Tim Kelly and attempting to avoid an incoming Harley Reid.

Henry — who missed six weeks with a high-grade hamstring strain earlier this year — was on crutches at three-quarter time with ice on his knee, with all hopes on a positive prognosis in the coming days.

With the Marvel Stadium roof firmly shut to keep the glum winter elements at bay unlike last week’s rain-soaked encounter in Adelaide, the free-flowing Saints steadily won out in the forward-half battle with thanks to the clean use of Jack Sinclair (31 disposals), Jack Steele (31) and Mason Wood, who could have had a field day against West Coast for the second time this year with a 3.4 scorecard.

Jayden Hunt led the visitors for disposals with 35 and was industrious in the under-manned brigade which was without stalwarts Elliot Yeo, Liam Duggan, Jeremy McGovern and Jake Waterman, while Tom Barrass dug in down back as St Kilda incrementally added to the pain.

Barrass had five intercepts by quarter-time in his match-up against Membrey as the home side registered 13 more entries than their opposition, but the Saints worked past the web to keep the goals ticking over; a Cooper Sharman roost from outside the arc to open the second bypassing the intercepting Eagles.

West Coast wrestled back momentum in the second half minutes after a Liam Ryan bump took out Liam Stocker temporarily (who had helped curtail Reid in the first half), but Membrey’s steady boot remedied the blip moments later to see his side through to a 19-point lead at the main change and get the Eagles back on the hook.

    02:12

With the territory battle going comfortably St Kilda’s way (inside-50s 67-37 by the final siren), West Coast only mustered six goals for the afternoon and just two after half-time, both from the boot of Jack Williams.

St Kilda's forward pressure was elite with 22 tackles inside-50 for the game to rattle their opponents, with West Coast's lack of pressure apparent on-field and on the stats sheet with zero for the match.

The Eagles attempted to stem the bleeding and shore up the backline with key forward Oscar Allen providing some defensive muscle, however Membrey and the Saints couldn’t be contained as red, white and black ran rampant under the roof.
