RECENTLY elevated rookie Sam Dunell thinks the Saints will be competitive against Collingwood on Saturday if they can deliver a consistent four-quarter effort in the game.

Dunell, who collected 13 disposals in his third AFL game on Sunday against the Western Bulldogs, talked up St Kilda’s chances at the team’s recovery session at the St Kilda Sea Baths on Monday morning.

“Obviously (Collingwood) had a really good win against GWS and they’re going really well at the moment … they’ve got a few injuries and they’re still playing some good footy,” the midfielder said.

“We just need a four quarter effort against Collingwood and we should be alright I reckon.”

“Our midfield’s quite mature so I think inside we will be able to get them (there), we’ve got a couple of key forwards that are in good form with Kosi (and Riewoldt) as well, so if we have the right ball use, we can go a long way.”

Off the back of the 76-point victory against the Dogs, the 22-year-old said his team’s performance was solid, despite missed opportunities which saw the Saints register 22 behinds on the scoreboard.

“Kicking 20 behinds is not ideal and we’ll have to make sure our accuracy is pretty right to make the most of our opportunities this week,” he said.

“I think we were pretty solid, probably a seven or eight out of ten.  Coming into half time there were a few things we weren’t doing quite well so we addressed that and in the second half we applied ourselves and the game opened up, so it was pleasing to get a good result in the end.”

The Saints now sit just one game outside the eight but possess a higher percentage than four teams above them.

“Our percentage is quite good compared to the sides around us.  It’s just all about the wins now for us from here to get those points up so we can have a chance to make it.”

“This time of year you’ve got to keep winning to stay in the eight, obviously there’s a few sides around that mark so we’ve just got to play to win.  It’s important to continue that form all the way through to September so it’s just a week by week thing, but it’s a huge game this week.”

“It’s great to be involved in a couple of wins, obviously you get the highs and the lows, I was sort of chalk and cheese for the first two weeks with Brisbane and then losing to Sydney the whole mood changes so every week for me is a good experience.  Last night playing in Melbourne was awesome and every week is just a learning curve, I’m loving it.”

“It would obviously be a different kettle of fish coming in at the start of the game, the intensity is a little bit higher (coming on as a sub) but I’m trying to come on and have an impact and sort of play a role for the team so it’s going okay so far.”
