The return of star GWS Giants spearhead Jeremy Cameron isn’t St Kilda’s only defensive concern, with the emergence of Rory Lobb and the presence of Jonathon Patton, Devon Smith and Steve Johnson the nucleus of a powerful front end, says Saints Coach Alan Richardson.
After serving a four-week suspension for a front on bump on Brisbane’s Rhys Mathieson during the NAB Challenge series, 2013 All Australian Cameron returns for his first appearance of the season.
In Cameron’s absence, and in the absence of Cameron McCarthy, mobile tall Lobb has bobbed up, booting four goals last weekend against Port Adelaide in the Giants’ biggest winning margin in their history. Whilst Palmer and Johnson have also been damaging across half-forward.
On the back of a strong defensive effort against reigning premiers Hawthorn last weekend in Tasmania, Richardson is confident his back six is capable of getting the job done against a talented Greater Western Sydney side.
“He’s [Cameron] a good player isn’t he? They’ve got some big guys up there. Lobb’s in good form, we know Patton is a really good player,” Richardson told reporters at a press conference on Friday.
“It looks like Smith’s likely to come back in – he’s a real goal scorer – so they’ve got some power in their front end.
“We played a team last week that had some power in the front end too and we felt that our defenders did a pretty good job.”
Across the opening four rounds of the season, and across the majority of 2015, St Kilda has established itself as one of the premier pressure applying sides in the competition, with the Saints ranked 3rd for pressure points and 4th for pressure acts.
Richardson expects more of the same from his players at Etihad Stadium on Sunday; from all over the ground to ensure Greater Western Sydney don’t provide their star-studded forward line with silver service.
“It’s all about pressure on the footy and we can say we’re going to get that. That’s something that our team does, we turn up and put pressure on,” Richardson said.
“Our guys make sure that they get that done and so far they have. I don’t expect anything less."
