Young Gun Blog - Arryn Siposs
Arryn Siposs provides an insight into life as an up and coming AFL player.
Having played for Sandringham on Sunday, I started the day with a personal recovery session down at the beach to help remove any aches and pains. It definitely helps the body recover, but wow it’s cold! Then it was off for a full day of work. I’m currently doing a traineeship at the Southern Footy League. The traineeship will get me qualified in the Sport and Recreation industry, which is an area that really interests me. I started work at 9am and finished at around 3:30pm, just in time to head to the Club for a Development Group session.
During the session I went over my match edits from the weekend’s game for Sandringham. Paul Hudson, our Development Manager highlighted that my attacking game was going really well, but outlined that as a forward I needed to improve on my defensive pressure and tackling.
Tuesday
We were in at the Club early doing flush runs and weights to prepare the body for the week ahead. In the afternoon I attended the St Kilda Corporate Golf Day. It was a really fun day and a great opportunity to mix with Club sponsors and my teammates away from the Linen House Centre. Unfortunately I didn’t have a great day out on the course finishing dead last and won a set of pink golf balls for my efforts!
As for some of the other players, Brett Peake and Will Johnson were hitting the ball pretty well, and Sam Crocker was walking around with a bit of a strut, but considering he’d never played golf before I’m not sure it would have been warranted.
Wednesday
With the Club having a BYE this weekend, we were in earlier at 11am for main training, which went for a solid 45 minutes. It was a good session and everyone worked hard on the track. After training we had a leg weights session and then it was home for a much needed rest.
Thursday
Worked from 9-3pm at the Southern Football League. Then I went straight to the Club, where we had quite an intense review of the Essendon game from the previous weekend. At 4:15pm I had a massage appointment with the physio and then was out on the ground with the Development Group working on goal kicking.
Friday
This morning I arrived at the Club at 8:30 for weights, which was followed by a light ‘touch’ skills session in the gym. The Development Group then met for a workshop to discuss media training and its role within AFL football.
Later we have our second main training for the week, which I am sure will be another thorough and high intensity session.
Saturday
Given that I am playing for Sandringham on Sunday, Saturday will be a leisure day. I try to take my mind off football and my own game when preparing. I’ll probably go for a walk or a light jog and just relax.
I am living with a host family around the Cheltenham area so I’m lucky that it is close to the beach and often enjoy popping down there.
I will then prepare for my game Sunday with an early night’s sleep and a good breakfast. We have a big game against Port Melbourne, so it would be fantastic to keep up our undefeated record this season!
Thanks for reading my blog.
Go Saints!
