St Kilda small forward Jack Lonie continues to mount his case for another opportunity at senior level after producing another eye-catching performance for Sandringham on Saturday.
Lonie, 20, hasn’t played at AFL level since Round 4, but has piled up positive efforts for the Zebras across the last couple of months.
At Burbank Oval on Saturday, Lonie booted three goals and collected 23 disposals to put his hand up for a senior recall.
“Jack Lonie has been outstanding for us since he lost his spot in the St Kilda team,” VFL coach Lindsay Gilbee told saints.com.au after Sandringham’s loss to Williamstown.
“He was prolific for us today and showed he’s a quality player that is keen to grow as a footballer.
“He’s been able to step up from just being a small forward into a player who can impact as a midfielder as well.
“We rate him highly and we think he’s very close towards getting his opportunity at AFL level again.”
With the bye coming up it gives Gilbee and his team an opportunity to review the first half of the season before the second half begins with three consecutive games at home from 24 June against Coburg.
“We’re a relatively inexperienced VFL team and a lot of players in their first year of football so it’s a big year in terms of development and learning to play the game,” Gilbee said.
“In terms of our performances to date, we’ve had patches of really good football but our inconsistency across four quarters is what’s hurt us.
“But we’ll keep developing our players and they’ll get better the more games they play.”
