Longer is traded to St Kilda on the final day of the trade period, with the Saints sending picks No. 25 and No. 41 north in exchange for the 20-year-old ruckman and pick No. 48.
"I'm very relieved," Longer told Gillette AFL Trade Radio at the time. "It's been a stressful few weeks for everyone involved. I'm elated with what the result is. I'm pretty excited to move on and get stuck into it with St Kilda."

After playing 16 games in his first season at Linen House Centre, Longer produces the best performance of his career to date against Carlton in Wellington on Anzac Day. The emerging ruckman amasses 51 hitouts and 20 possessions in a match-up against Cameron Wood and Levi Casboult.

St Kilda announces that Longer will be sidelined for at least a month after presenting with some concussion symptoms following a head knock in the VFL.

Despite not managing to dethrone Tom Hickey all season, Longer inks a two-year contract extension, tying him to the Saints until at least the end of 2018.
“It's taken a bit of time to get my concussion symptoms treated, and that involved a bit of time away from football, but I feel a lot better and now I just want to concentrate on playing footy and getting back into the ones,” Longer said at the time.

After wrestling the No. 1 ruck spot back from Hickey in Round 5, Longer builds his form before producing the strongest performance of his career to date against the Western Bulldogs in Round 10. The 23-year-old collects a career-high 55 hitouts against three different Dogs ruckmen.
“I thought we got beaten in the midfield, but I thought Billy Longer was terrific. I thought Billy, up against probably three blokes really, was really positive for us. He’s been in pretty good shape Billy,” Alan Richardson said in his press conference after the game.
