Recently acquired St Kilda key defender Nathan Brown doesn’t hold any resentment for how his time finished at the club he played in a premiership with, rather he is thrilled to start afresh at an important juncture in his career.
Brown played 130 games in black and white, including the 2010 premiership against his new team, and was Collingwood’s vice-captain last year before he pursued a change of scenery during last October’s trade period.
The 28-year-old admits he has ridden most of the ups and downs the game can throw up, and because of that he was able to adapt to what happened at the end of last season, allowing him to make a smooth transition to his new club.
“I’m not stupid, I’ve played the game for 11 years and you see a lot. You can’t take it to heart, you’ve just got to adapt to it and see what the best situation is. And lucky enough, St Kilda came and approached,” Brown told reporters at Linen House Centre on Wednesday morning.
“It’s been a really good fit and I’m excited to see what happens, not only in my personal career but at the club as well. It’s been an exciting period for my life and my football; I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it so far.
"I’m three months down and really liking it at the Saints. It’s rejuvenated me; I’m attacking pre-season with energy and passion, so it’s been a great thing for me.”
With his twin brother Mitch’s career coming to an abrupt stop at the West Coast Eagles at the end of last year, Brown is well aware of how fickle this game can be.
In the back end of his football journey, the experienced full-back believes the switch has reinvigorated him at an important time of his career, where some players can quietly wander off into the abyss.
“You could look at it that way. I just turned 28 before Christmas, and it’s that period where you’re in the peak of your AFL career but then it could slide off very quickly,” Brown said.
“Coming across has given me a new challenge and desire for the game. To fit into Saints footy and the program and to try and make finals again having not made finals for the last three seasons, you start to get a real good thirst for it.”
