Who will play on Gary Ablett?

After holding Ryan Griffen to only 15 touches last week, Maverick Weller will be looking to take his second scalp for 2015.

The last time Ablett played against St Kilda was round nine last year, kicking three goals in the first quarter. Maverick Weller, in his third game for the club, then moved to tag the Gold Coast skipper, bravely restricting his ex-teammates’ influence for the remainder of the game.

If Ablett lines up for the Suns this week he can expect to have the newly appointed Saints leadership group member breathing down his neck.

Can pocket-rocket Jack Lonie back up his impressive debut?

Anyone watching the debut of Jack Lonie last week knows that it’s not only what he does with the ball that makes him exciting.

He showcased his defensive pressure early in the pre-season and is fast becoming a fan favourite. This week the unlucky Suns player who lines up on Lonie won’t only have to keep up with his pace, but will also have to deal with Lonie’s immense tackling pressure when rebounding out of the back 50.

No doubt the Suns will be looking at his game footage, or at least getting Curtly Hampton on the phone for some advice after last week. Watch this.

Can the Saints shake their losing streak at Metricon Stadium?

St Kilda has lost its last couple games at Metricon stadium, and while a humid night is expected on in the Gold Coast on Saturday, the boys are fit and ready to face to the heat.

By all reports this pre-season was the toughest the Saints have ever endured. Training camps in New Zealand and Canberra had the boys taking on greater physical and mental challenges.

Last week against GWS the Saints ran away with the game in the fourth quarter and while they didn’t get the win in the end, their ability to keep fighting in the dying moments showcased their extensive preparation.

How will Jack Billings fair in his return to the side?

Jack Billings started his season with a bang last week, collecting 32 disposals for Sandringham in his return from the hamstring injury.

Billings had a quiet outing last time he played against the Suns with only the 12 disposals to his name.

Development Coach Paul Hudson raved about Billings’ influence on the contest last week and if that is anything to go by, Saints fans should expect to see the skillful left-footer dismantling the Suns’ defensive zone with his precise kicking.

Who will win the battle of Riewoldt versus May?

Nick Riewoldt is free to play this week after scans revealed that there was no damage from his nasty collision on Sunday afternoon.

This is very good news for Saints fans and very bad news for Steven May, who will have his hands full trying to limit one of the most athletic forwards in the AFL.

Riewoldt wound back the clock last year and showed the football world that he only gets better with age.

The two players had cracking contests each time their sides met last year. Despite May holding Riewoldt to a single goal in round 19 last year, the skipper’s influence was crucial up the ground and with Josh Bruce showing his marking prowess last week, Riewoldt will be happy to clear out and give his young apprentice some open space in front of goals.

Which Suns players deserve attention?

Spearhead Tom Lynch is back this week after serving a one-match suspension for an incident during the NAB Challenge. The runner-up for Gold Coast’s 2015 Club Champion kicked a combined eight goals against St Kilda last year and will be raring to go in his first game for 2015. Luke Delaney will most likely have the job on Lynch, but it will take a combined effort from Sam Fisher, playing his 200th game, and the rest of the Saints backline to stop both Lynch and Sam Day from having significant scoreboard impact this weekend.

Dion Prestia caused headaches for the Saints midfield last year, amassing 31 possessions in round 19, while Michael Rischitelli was impressive last weekend kicking two clutch goals as the Suns went to down Melbourne. Aggressive midfielder Tom Curren has been included this week and will likely have the task of playing on one of Gold Coast’s high profile ball-winner’s.
