ELECTRIFYING Saints forward Jack Lonie has continued his rapid rise, earning the round 14 nomination for the AFL’s Rising Star Award after Sunday’s 110-point win over Essendon.
In his 12th senior game, the 18-year-old collected 18 disposals, registered five inside 50s and booted a miraculous goal from the boundary line which has been nominated for Goal of the Year.
Behind the Guernsey: Jack Lonie
Lonie’s Rising Star nomination is St Kilda’s first since Jack Billings in June last year and third since Alan Richardson took over.
“Obviously it was a great win and it was pretty exciting to win by 100 points,” Lonie told SAINTS.com.au.
“I’ve been reasonably consistent but I thought yesterday was one of my better games. It would have been nice to kick a few more goals as I missed a few easy ones.
“I really hope that we can keep building on that performance and keep growing in confidence. It’s a really special group and we are all pretty excited to achieve something special.”

The Seaford local has booted 10 goals this season and could have easily kicked more on the weekend.
He made light work of his most difficult chance, dribbling the ball through from deep in the forward pocket after receiving a handball from Jack Sinclair, a teammate who Lonie believes is not far away from earning a Rising Star nomination himself.
“I didn’t really look inside – which I probably should have – instead I just got the handball, chucked it on the boot and see how it went,” Lonie said of his miracle goal.
“I really think Jack Sinclair has gone close the last few weeks. He’s always doing the right thing and he always goes under the radar. He’s really consistent, does all the team things, and I really hope he can get a nomination shortly.”

Senior coach Alan Richardson said he was delighted with Lonie’s progression this season, especially considering his light frame.
“Jack has been very good since he arrived,” Richardson told SAINTS.com.au.
“His defensive pressure is up there with the best and the way he’s able to get himself into dangerous positions in the forward half, combined with his footy nous and ability to execute, make him a very important player for us.
“He’s embraced everything that has been asked of him and has worked tirelessly with his mentor Adam Schneider and forward-line coach Aaron Hamill. Both of those guys have been terrific for his development.”
Lonie was selected with pick 41 in the 2014 National Draft and has played all but one game for St Kilda this season.
