Last week:
Sandringham clinched a seven-point win against Collingwood at North Port oval to keep its premiership chances alive.
Comparatively, the Box Hill Hawks earnt the week off following their top two finish and a 40-point win over Footscray in their first final.
Players to watch:
Sandringham – Cameron Shenton
St Kilda listed utility Shenton played a key role off half-back and on the wings at North Port Oval last week, gathering 13 disposals and kicking a goal. He didn’t pick up high numbers statistically, but his run and drive was really important in the win against Collingwood.
Box Hill Hawks – Jonathon Simpkin
The AFL-listed Hawk was a clear standout in Box Hill’s first final win over Footscray, amassing 38 disposals and kicking a goal. His ball winning ability combined with his long kicking is a lethal weapon the Hawks often use to their advantage. The Zebras will need to curtail Simpkin’s influence to topple the Hawks on Sunday.
Conditions:
North Port Oval is a long ground with plenty of space on the wings, which can be used as an advantage if players are prepared to take risks. The weather is forecast to be sunny with a top of 21 degrees.
St Kilda players in the squad:
Curren, Holmes, Markworth, Siposs, McKenzie, Pierce, Saunders, Saad, Shenton, Simpkin
Notable opposition players:
Simpkin, Whitecross, O’Rourke, Mirra, Grimley, Ceglar
From the mouth of Huddo:
We have a heavy focus on the start. We were quite slow early on last week and have addressed that this week.
The intensity of the Collingwood game was really high. We hadn’t played in a match like that for quite a while. I was really happy with our ability to win the ball in close and we’ll have to lift again against Hawthorn. We need to press the Hawks when they have the ball and not give them time with the ball.
We’re unlikely to make too many changes and Adam Cockie will unfortunately miss again. The boys are excited and so am I. It’s a big challenge but one that we’re up for.
