SANDRINGHAM has completed a remarkable comeback on Sunday to overrun Essendon by nine points at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

In what was the first game at the ground since the stunning re-development was completed, the Zebras recovered from a 20-point three-quarter time deficit to remain undefeated for the 2014 season.

Sandringham coach Simon McPhee said the win was a vital one for the club after St Kilda’s loss to Hawthorn on Saturday.

“It’s really important for our club, “ McPhee said.

“We had a tough day yesterday, we know that, it was really important for the players who played here today to come out and put in a really good performance which they did.

“There’s a lot to look forward to, so we’re excited by that.”

Seb Ross, Arryn Siposs and Terry Milera were amongst the best for the Zebras, with McPhee full of praise for his players.

“Sebby was outstanding, particularly early around the clearances,” McPhee said.

“Terry’s been pretty good for a while and Sippo, particularly in the last quarter, has been building towards that sort of performance so it’s really pleasing for him to have a good game today.”

It was a match that featured everything that makes football brilliant, though it was the Bombers who got on the front foot early – kicking eight goals with the wind to the Zebras’ six in a high-scoring opening term.

With the roles reversed and Sandringham having the wind for the second quarter, the Zebras managed to wrestle back some control in the second to take a slender seven-point lead into the main break.

Though it was expected that the Bombers would have the better of the opportunities in the third, Essendon put on a dominant performance, with the game played almost entirely in the Bombers’ forward half, amassing a 21-point lead at the final change.

It didn’t deter the Zebras though, with Sandringham putting on a clinical display in the final quarter to secure the club’s fourth win for the season.
