SCANS conducted on Jarryn Geary's elbow on Sunday morning have confirmed that the defender has ruptured a ligament in his elbow and will require surgery this week.

Geary suffered the injury early in yesterday's game against Hawthorn at the MCG and is expected to miss around 12 weeks.

Several players are expected to have a long spell on the sidelines with recent injuries to David Armitage (leg), Nathan Wright (leg), Sam Gilbert (foot), Tom Hickey (foot) and Eli Templeton (arm).

St Kilda's Head of Football, Chris Pelchen said: "Jarryn has been a key on-field leader for the Saints in 2014 and his absence will be sorely missed but we look forward to his return later this year."

In other injury news, Sam Fisher will be assessed further tomorrow for a tight hamstring after he left the field during the first quarter of the Sandringham v Essendon VFL game today.
