Solider On
The St Kilda Football Club has formed a new charity partnership with Solider On.
Soldier On is about Australians coming together to show their support for our physically and psychologically wounded; we will always have their backs. They work to enhance recovery, inspire communities and empower Australia’s wounded servicemen and women, giving those who have served our country the dignity they deserve and the chance to do and be whatever they choose.
It is a partnership that the entire club – from the playing group to our staff and board – have embraced.
An important element of the partnership is to recognise a wounded ambassador at each game. This week’s ambassador is Mark Johnston
Mark joined the Army in 1989 as an officer cadet at the Australian Defence Force Academy. Following his time at the Academy in Canberra, Mark was posted to Toowoomba as part of the 7th Signal Regiment where he worked on tactical electrical warfare support. He chose work with Signals in the hopes that it would lead to a posting with the intelligence corps in the future.
Following his time in Toowoomba, he was posted to Darwin for 2 years, where he oversaw the handing over of responsibility of border patrols and maintaining a human intelligence network in the Northern Territory and finally he was deployed to Papua New Guinea for work in Bougainville for 2 ½ years.
With injuries to his knees, back and shoulder, and having undergone several surgeries and physio treatment as a result, Mark says he will not be the same after his time with the Army. Formerly a keen and talented runner, Mark doesn’t have the ability to run or even cycle, due to his injuries. Due to the variety of issues he faces, he also finds it difficult to swim or undertake other exercise he used to enjoy.
With a young family and wife, he says this is particularly difficult as there are many things he’d like to do, but find impossible due to the injuries he has. However, he says without the support of his family, it would be much harder. Though he will never be back to what he was before he joined the ADF, he says it’s important to live life in a positive way, without letting your issues get in the way.
