JACK Newnes played 18 games this season, learning the ropes as a running defender, wingman and also spending time in the midfield.
After seven matches in 2012, Newnes took significant steps this year and impressed with his calmness, poise and consistency.
The 20-year-old played every game from round six up until round 18, illustrating excellent durability for a young player.
Newnes is a player St Kilda fans can look forward to watching in the years to come.
Development coach Tony Micale:
“Jack had a good year. He went from playing seven games last season to 18 games this year as a running half-back. He found the ball and towards the end of the year was averaging about 18 possessions per game which is very good for a defender.
Not only did he get his fair share of the ball but he wasn’t exposed defensively. It was a good learning year for him.
Another pre-season will help his physicality and running ability. Jack should look to elevate himself to the midfield.”
