Saints look to regain their bite for Maddie's Match

The Saints will be fixed on taking home the four points against Richmond in the significant Maddie's Match fixture.

Maddie’s Match is more than just a game to St Kilda.

And eager to make amends for last week’s loss, the Saints will be fixed on taking home the four points against Richmond.

    Last time we met…

    St Kilda 10.10 (70) def. by Richmond 16.7 (103)

The purple, white and black fought bravely against the would-be Premiers, before a seven-goal final term spelled a convincing win for the Tigers.

Richmond brought in seven fresh faces, including Trent Cotchin, Shane Edwards, David Astbury and Kane Lambert, while the Saints welcomed back injured midfielder Jack Steele and young trio Ben Long, Ben Paton and Nick Coffield.

Jade Gresham slips through a Trent Cotchin tackle.

    The standouts...

Rowan Marshall pieced together arguably the best game of his terrific 2019 campaign, amassing 33 hit-outs, 19 disposals, nine marks, four clearances and two Brownlow votes in a stunning display.

Youngster Hunter Clark (23 disposals) added to his glittering highlights reel, while the emerging contingent of Ben Long, Nick Coffield, Josh Battle and Ben Paton showed themselves as important pieces of the Saints’ future.

Rowan Marshall was superb last time the Saints and Tigers met.

Stand-in skipper Seb Ross (27 disposals) and Dan Hannebery (23) were strong through the middle, while Josh Bruce topped the club’s goalkicking list with three majors.

Despite being bolstered by seven new inclusions, Richmond superstar Dustin Martin remained best afield with 36 possessions, taking home the Ian Stewart Medal and three Brownlow votes.

Dustin Martin is presented the Ian Stewart Medal by Alex Riewoldt.

It certainly wasn’t a one-man effort as the stellar line-up – minus Jack Riewoldt and Toby Nankervis – stormed home in the last to secure the four points.

Sydney Stack was dynamic with four goals and a Mark of the Year contender, Mabior Chol and Tom Lynch slotted three apiece, while Dion Prestia and Dylan Grimes were excellent in their respective domains.

    Moment of the match...

Nicholas Hind booted back-to-back goals in just his third game, electrifying the crowd with his pace and flair in front of the big sticks.

    History repeating...?

Seb Ross has pulled in the numbers in his past handful of outings against the Tigers, averaging 32 touches from his past six meetings.

Two of Ross’ recent matches against the yellow-and-black have polled maximum Brownlow votes.

Seb Ross leads the Saints out onto Marvel Stadium in last year's Maddie's Match.

    From the archives...

A 21-goal blitz from the Saints in 2017 still brings a smile to the faces of the St Kilda faithful.

In their new colours, St Kilda slotted 14-goals-to-one in the opening half, before the Tigers regained ground in the final term to go down by 67 points.

    Round 3 recap…

The Saints were rattled by a sharp and precise Collingwood outfit on Saturday afternoon, going down by 44 points after being dismantled in the opening half.

Brett Ratten’s men couldn’t stand up the Magpies’ merciless pressure in the opening half, and while they managed to mitigate the damage in the second half, it was too little, too late.

Richmond were also left to lick their wounds after being taken apart by a sleek Hawthorn line-up by 32 points.

Last Thursday’s defeat marked the second consecutive week the Tigers were kept to just five goals following a 36-point draw against the Magpies in the season re-opener.

    The ins and outs...

Josh Battle will make his first senior appearance of 2020 after being selected as an emergency for the Saints' past three outings.

Nicholas Hind will make way for the St Kilda swingman.

Richmond are set for a substantial boost with the return of Dustin Martin, who missed last week's match against Hawthorn with bruised ribs.

The Tigers are also set to regain Premiership players Liam BakerToby Nankervis and Kamdyn McIntosh, with Marlion PickettIvan SoldoJack Graham and Daniel Rioli omitted.

    The terrific Tigers...

Two Premierships in three years is evidence enough of Richmond’s might.

Damien Hardwick’s Premiership-winning team features at least one All Australian in every line – plus one in coaches’ box – to take the team’s tally to seven.

The Tigers' All Australian line-up were on full display in this year's State of Origin.

Dustin Martin looms as the most obvious candidate to stampede through the Saints and rekindle some of the Tigers' cohesion, but in a well-balanced and dangerous midfield, every player looms as a threat.

Trent Cotchin’s class and Dion Prestia’s explosiveness – combined with the often-unsung efforts of Kane Lambert and Shane Edwards – is just a starting point for St Kilda to tackle.

Bachar Houli, David Astbury and Dylan Grimes are there to repel opposition entries and catapult the Tigers into attack, while a hungry Jack Riewoldt and Tom Lynch lie in wait up the other end.

    On the injury front…

Jarryn Geary will miss this week's match. Photo: Corey Scicluna.

St Kilda skipper Jarryn Geary will spend one more week on the sidelines as he recovers from a minor hamstring strain, while Richmond will embrace Dustin Martin after the Brownlow medallist missed last week’s clash with bruised ribs.

Both sides emerged from last week’s matches unscathed.

Saints knock off reigning Premiers in milestone Maddie’s Match

A significant day for St Kilda has turned into a sensational one after knocking off the reigning Premiers by 26 points in the fifth Maddie’s Match on Saturday afternoon.

A significant day for St Kilda has turned into a sensational one after knocking off the reigning Premiers by 26 points in the fifth Maddie’s Match on Saturday afternoon.

Just 15 points separated the two sides at the final change, before a crucial goal from Dean Kent following a tense few minutes confirmed the 15.3 (93) to 10.7 (67) result.

St Kilda remedied its work and pressure around the contest from last week's loss to Collingwood, and in line with Brett Ratten’s message throughout the week, emerged on top of the clearances (32-30) and drew level with the Tigers’ contested ball.

Richmond’s hunt never died down, but their trademark press and pressure were unable to crack the Saints’ steely determination.

It was an all-round team performance from the red, white and black, with Saints in every line playing critical roles in subduing the hungry Tigers.

While Richmond’s dangerous surges threatened St Kilda’s slender lead several times throughout the evening, former Tiger Dan Butler delivered when it mattered to keep his new side’s nose in front.

Butler (three goals) took home the Ian Stewart Medal after being judged best-on-ground, and was accompanied up forward by Tim Membrey (three goals, seven marks) and pairs to Jack Lonie, Kent and Rowan Marshall.

Marshall (25 hit-outs, 15 disposals, two goals) flew solo in the ruck after the late withdrawal of Paddy Ryder, and performed admirably against Toby Nankervis (26 hit-outs, 17 possessions), who was best on ground for the Tigers.

While Dion Prestia (25 disposals), Trent Cotchin (23) and Tom Lynch (three goals) fired for Richmond, the combined forced of Seb Ross and Callum Wilkie quelled the influence of the returning Dustin Martin to great effect.

Saints Jake Carlisle (nine marks), Jack Billings (25 disposals) and 2020 newcomer Josh Battle (16 disposals, one goal) were solid all day to be among the best for their side.

The triumph evens the red, white and black’s ledger and makes amends for last week’s performance, with the victory buoyed by the Hon. Greg Hunt’s announcement that the Federal Government would pledge $1 million towards a new clinical trial for Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes.

It looked like the Tigers of old had returned after Shane Edwards jagged the first major in the opening 10 seconds of the game, before a subsequent four-goal run from the Saints signalled their intentions to recapture their Round 2 form.

The red-hot Butler opened St Kilda’s scoring account for the third consecutive week as the Saints’ pressure and strength on the counter-attack began to pay dividends on the scoreboard.

Ratten's men were noticeably more aggressive compared to last Saturday’s action and maintained that consistency across all four quarters, with Zak Jones, Ben Long and Jack Steele’s hardness standing up in the clinches.

Richmond brought the heat in the second term to challenge the Saints’ resolve, but spirited bursts and end-to-end plays showed the home side weren’t going to retreat into their shells.

Three clean goals to Lonie, Butler and Bradley Hill from fluid passages showcased the new-look Saints at their peak, while Lynch and Jack Riewoldt’s strong hands up forward kept the Tigers in the contest up the other end.

Hearts were in mouths when Hill was felled in a late tackle with a suspected ankle injury, but ran out the game unhampered to finish with 19 touches.

Jade Gresham was just as lucky after copping a nasty hit – and a nice shiner – to the face in the dying stages of the third term. Jones didn’t fare as well after being benched with hamstring tightness in the same quarter.

Three straight majors straight after half-time thrust the Saints out to a 28-point lead, but Damien Hardwick's victory-starved side refused to throw in the towel as a handy goal from Nankervis on the three-quarter time siren sliced the deficit to under three goals.

A late charge from the yellow-and-black in the final term came close to derailing St Kilda's stunning display, before Kent steadied the ship 10-minutes in to establish a match-winning buffer.

While the Tigers will look to rekindle their Premiership form over the coming weeks, credit goes to the red, white and black in what was a momentous day for the club.

St Kilda will look to chalk up its third win of the season next Saturday afternoon against Carlton, while Richmond will be seeking its second win of the year against West Coast at Metricon Stadium next Thursday night.
